KALEA
an intriguing combination of flute, violin and cello that improvises and composes through classical, folk, and experimental music
Kalea originated in 2018 with three friends improvising at home and building a strong musical relationship. Flautist Katie Macdonald, violinist Beatriz Rola and cellist Anna Litvinenko came from classical backgrounds but have also expanded their practices to other genres. Improvisation has always been a foundation in their process, often using poetry, visual art, film and dance as an impetus to create new works that aim to blur the boundaries between classical and experimental sound worlds.
Playing with Words
Splendor, Amsterdam
a musical & visual journey through artistic & literary movements of the 19th & 20th centuries
Kalea and British visual artist Phoebe Pryor have come together to present Playing with Words, a musical and visual journey through artistic and literary movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work was inspired on Julian Rosefeldt’s Manifesto, a fascinating film installation in which actor Cate Blanchett took on 13 different roles to represent 13 different manifestos of the 20th century. This work compelled them to devise a show with a similar concept, but this time told through music. Kalea and Phoebe have taken poetry and writings from different artistic movements from early Romanticism to Post- modernism (including works by W.H. Auden, J.W. Goethe, Søren Kierkegaard, Filippo Marinetti, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein, among many others) and have reimagined how they look and soun like through original compositions, improvisation, and live drawing.
